Songs of Innocence and Experience

We drove into the rising sun. Cedric and Mike asleep in the back. Arlo and I too tired to talk, on the road all night, Unwound crescendo breaking through the morning fog and I can still feel it thirty years later.

If he’d fallen asleep, I would have fallen asleep and we’d all still be asleep. Maybe we are and this is the dream.

Aisling tuning her violin at Eddy’s before we record Break Out the Bucket. We’re still kids. Standing in line at Campus Queen in El Paso, paths crossing in New York, a house party in Orange County. Dancing with Susan on New Year’s Eve, in El Paso again in 1999.

Plugging in with Arlo at the 7-11 on Mesa and University, stooping under the low ceiling in Saskatoon, watching the Dregtones play a bedroom in Auburn, driving to Chicago the next day.

Always talking about what we wanted to be, what we wanted to do. How we were going to do it. Just a small town boy born and raised in south Detroit who grabs the mic to tell us he’ll die before he’s sold.

Some of us end up marrying carpenters.

And some keep moving.

You hear it in these songs. Two rainbows. The sun and moon spinning. The friends who love and burn you. The celebrated summer that ends with Glenn Danzig kicking sand in your face. The city shimmering behind you. The tension between innocence and experience that never breaks.

Because maybe it doesn’t have to.
